Kenka Combat Academy is part of The Combat Budo Organisation. Kenka Combat Academy Teaches Combat Ju Jitsu our ethos is to teach a Practical Martial Art that can translate into competition format.
Combudo founded in Japan in 2000, serves as a dynamic platform for martial arts enthusiasts.Headed by martial arts innovator Lee Hasdell, Combudo blends traditional Budo codes with practical applications for the modern world.
Combat Ju-Jitsu encompasses a wide range of techniques:
Everything is practiced, drilled and then tested in controlled sparring, scenario drills and pressure tested within the timed micro fights.
For a Martial Art to be effective in a self defence altercation it has to be tested under pressure to mimic the stress the body goes under when in a highly emotive state. By sparring, scenario drills and pressure testing this helps replicate your bodies natural responses.
Prioritize Your Personal Safety: A Holistic Approach
At Kenka Combat Academy, our head instructor has empowered individuals from diverse backgrounds with essential knowledge. Personal safety and self-defence should never be an afterthought. As crime rates rise, there has never been a more critical time to take your safety seriously.
But here’s the difference: We’re not just teaching a few martial arts techniques that might not work in real-life situations. Personal safety extends beyond physical responses, it’s a mindset. It’s about understanding how to avoid dangerous situations altogether and always being aware off your surroundings.
In our training, you’ll explore both mental and physical aspects:
Join us on this journey—a holistic approach to personal safety.
Remember, safety is a mindset, and knowledge is your best defence.
Combat Conditioning: Beyond Fighters and Military Personnel
Combat conditioning isn’t exclusive to professional fighters or military personnel, it’s a powerful fusion of principles and training techniques that elevate overall fitness. Here’s why it matters:
Embrace combat conditioning, it’s not just about fighting; it’s about thriving.
Combudo Combat Ju-Jitsu competitions are split into a cadets group and three separate adult categories for male and female competitors; A, B & C, designed to let you enter the one best suited for your own experience and level, each one allowing you to progress up to the most challenging. Each category has separate age and weight categories, along with there own rule set and safety equipment.
‘Combat Ju-Jitsu’ is Unified Amateur Rules – mixed martial arts in a Gi on the Tatami Mats.
Competitors will wear competition standard Gi’s, Black 7oz MMA Gloves, Groin Guards, Mouth Guards and Black Elasticated Shin & Instep. Red or Blue Belts, ( the Cadet category has a separate equipment list)
Combatives is taught within Combat Ju-Jitsu syllabus, however we do teach this as a stand alone for small groups, businesses or individuals who cannot commit to regular training but want some basic, effective drills that can be used in a physical confrontation, this can be incorporated into are self defence courses if required. what you will learn is gross motor skills, with basic, high impact striking techniques; open handed strikes, knees, elbows and the tactical head butt, these will that be put together in a scenario based drills where you will practice against pads and partners ending with the final pressure test in timed micro fights.
Pressure testing through micro fights is a training method that simulates real-world combat scenarios to assess and enhance a practitioner’s ability to apply self-defence techniques under intense, high-stress conditions. In micro fights, participants engage in short; 30 seconds, controlled bouts that mimic sudden, close-quarters encounters. These scenarios force individuals to think and react quickly, testing their physical and mental resilience as well as their ability to execute techniques effectively when under pressure. The ultimate aim of micro fights is to expose practitioners to the chaos and unpredictability of a real fight, allowing them to refine their skills in a safe but challenging environment. This method helps to build confidence, improve decision-making, and ensure that the techniques learned in training can be reliably used in actual self-defence situations. By incorporating micro fights into combative training, individuals can better prepare for the realities of personal protection, gaining the experience needed to remain effective and composed in the face of danger.
Kenka Combat Academy is built on the core ethos of Combudo: respect, discipline, humility, and continuous improvement. Based in Macclesfield, we honour the traditions of martial arts while embracing a modern, concept‑driven approach that reflects how real self‑defence and real training have evolved.
Our curriculum blends striking, stand‑up grappling, clinch work, takedowns, positional control, and ground grappling into one cohesive system. Students learn striking fundamentals, clinch entries, throws, trips, pins, escapes, submissions, and defensive strategies. This creates a style that captures the adaptability and realism of MMA in a gi, while maintaining the structure, etiquette, and community values of a traditional dojo.
This hybrid approach makes Kenka Combat Academy one of the most versatile places to train martial arts in Macclesfield—ideal for beginners, hobbyists, and experienced martial artists alike.
Training follows a clear, structured pathway designed to help students develop confidence and functional ability at every stage.
This progression ensures students can use their skills under pressure, against partners who are actively trying to counter them—developing genuine functional ability, not just memorised techniques.
We recognise that not everyone wants to compete, and people join for many different reasons: fitness, confidence, self‑defence, personal development, or simply the enjoyment of learning. Students who do want to compete have the opportunity and support to pursue that path, but competition is never a requirement.
Regardless of goals, everyone trains to the same high standard, creating a strong, inclusive community where all students benefit from principle‑based, functional training.
While modern MMA focuses primarily on sport performance, Kenka Combat Academy emphasises functional self‑defence, personal growth, emotional regulation, and real‑world adaptability. Students experience the same dynamic blend of striking, stand‑up grappling, and ground fighting found in MMA, but within a framework that prioritises long‑term development and traditional martial values.
At Kenka Combat Academy, students develop effective self‑defence skills, confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of identity—on and off the mats. For anyone in Macclesfield looking for a modern, realistic, and welcoming martial arts academy, Kenka Combat Academy offers a unique and powerful path forward.

The Combat Budo Organistion is headed up by Lee Hasdell, 9th Dan Hanshi, which was founded in Japan in 2000 which Kenka Combat Academy is proud to be a member of, KCA Chief Instructor, has been involved in Martial Arts and combat sports for over 40 years. 25 years involved in teaching, coaching and 20+ years in competing.
Due to work commitments, he stopped competing but knew the importance of his training due to his work in the private security field, which he combined with teaching private groups involved in this kind of work, which he still does today. these groups are not only about training but breaking down and examining current confrontations. he used to be an SIA trainer however became disillusioned with what was being taught and believes that this opened the door to sub standard security. As well as teaching public groups, his ethos is the same no matter which group he is teaching and that is to train hard and like a fighter as only then will you be able to defend yourself if a violent confrontation happens, Kenka Combat Academy coach people to fight for competition but this is only a very small part off what we do and very few students want to compete, the majority of our students are ordinary people who train so they know how to if anything ever happens, hopefully they will train for something that never happens however it is better to be prepared, than not. All students go through the exact same training.
